He Xiangning Art Museum
A national museum named for He Xiangning (1878-1972), a painter who was also one of the founding figures of the Chinese revolutionary movement, and, by the museum's own account, the first national art museum in China named after an individual. Central government approved it in May 1995 and it opened in April 1997 with its name written by the then general secretary. It is still directly under the United Front Work Department, which is an unusual line of authority for an art museum and shows in what it collects - He Xiangning's own work first, then women's art, overseas Chinese art and traditional painting.
