The 500-metre street of brush, ink, paper and seal shops running east from the South Gate to the Beilin Museum, named for the 1609 Guanzhong Academy (now a teacher-training college behind its old gate) and paved as a 'Ming-Qing' pedestrian street in the 1990s. It is the natural walk from the wall to the stele museum and the place to buy a brush, an inkstone or a rubbing print — at tourist prices, with the odd real calligrapher working in a doorway. No ticket, always open, shops roughly 9:00-21:00.

Beat the crowds

Morning is shopkeepers setting out; evening is the tourist flow from the South Gate — the calligraphers who work in doorways are there in the afternoon.
