The South Gate's barbican doubles as a stage: a costumed 'Tang welcome ceremony' with a set-piece show, 'Dream of Chang'an', staged in the gate square and the barbican on set evenings, plus the projection-and-light show on the gate towers that the wall's night ticket buys you for free. The paid show is the uncertain part: the wall's official website still lists it at ¥260 on Thursday-to-Sunday nights as 'coming soon' on a page whose copyright reads 2016-17, and the current programme lives only on the '西安城墙景区' mini-program. Treat the ceremony as seasonal and check before you plan a night round it; the lit gate and the barbican from the wall top are there every evening the South Gate is open to 22:00.
