The Taoist monastery at the foot of the mountain in Huayin town, founded in the Song around the spring of the legendary sleeping sage Chen Tuan, and the traditional start of 'the one road up Huashan': the hiking gate (华山门) is beside it, and on the mountain's temple-fair day the town's pilgrims fill it. Free, open in daylight, a garden of old trees and halls that most cable-car visitors never see. For the day-tripper it is the reason to take the North line down and the bus into town before the train; for the night-climber it is the trailhead.
