Do Shanghai museums still need a reservation, and can I book on a foreign passport?

Depends

Big museums are walk-in again. Where you still book, official channels take passports; WeChat-only venues are the catch.

What it depends on

  • IfNormal days at Shanghai Museum East, First Congress Memorial, MAP or Yu Garden→ thenWalk in with your passport; buy paid tickets at the gate or via the foreigner button.
  • IfPassport explicitly listed (Bowen Girls' School) or an official bypass (Sun Yat-sen's house desk, MAP button)→ thenFollow the official route; bring the physical passport.
  • IfBilingual site, WeChat-only booking, passport not mentioned (Soong Ching-ling's house, Natural History Museum peak mode)→ thenTry the mini-program's document dropdown early. If there is no passport option, phone the venue; an English site alone does not confirm you can book.
  • IfSmall venue, WeChat only, nothing said (Hengfu Heritage Museum)→ thenTreat as unavailable unless someone with a Chinese ID books for you.

The 2020-23 'reserve everything' era is over in Shanghai. Of the venues in this atlas, the Shanghai Museum East, the Memorial of the First CPC Congress and the Museum of Art Pudong all say on their own sites that ordinary admission is walk-in: swipe or show your passport at security, no advance step. Reservations come back only at peak times (national holidays, summer, blockbuster shows) and are announced on each venue's site or WeChat official account.

At venues that still require reservations or online tickets, the official booking channel accepts passport numbers. The Natural History Museum's visitor rules say 'foreign visitors must carry the original passport' and 'one ticket per ID number (ID card, HK/Macau/Taiwan permit or passport) per day'. Shanghai Museum East offers an official English email channel during peak-period booking, without a Chinese phone number. The Museum of Art Pudong's 'foreign visitors buy directly' button leads to Trip.com. Bring your physical passport; entry staff match it to the booking.

Booking with a foreign passport depends on the venue. Bowen Girls' School (Xintiandi) explicitly lists passports in the First Congress Memorial's booking mini-program (opening notice, March 2026). Soong Ching-ling's residence has a detailed bilingual ticket table, but booking is WeChat-only and the site never mentions passports; you still need to check the document dropdown. Sun Yat-sen's residence says its on-site desk 'provides consultation and assistance' if you cannot book online. It authorises no third-party sellers, so skip Klook. The Museum of Art Pudong offers its 'foreign visitors buy directly' button through Trip.com. The Hengfu Heritage Museum and Symphony Museum only offer WeChat booking with no passport guidance; plan as though you cannot enter.

Smaller venues can be harder to book: district heritage houses, some free museums and some cruise or theatre tickets use only a WeChat mini-program with real-name registration. Official pages rarely say whether foreign passports work; the form's document dropdown decides. If this atlas says 'WeChat mini-program only' without official passport guidance, allow for it not working. Call the venue, try the ticket window or plan a different day.

Practical order: check the venue's own site first (the hours and rules pages are usually bilingual or at least stable), then its WeChat official account for the current notice, then a third-party seller (Trip.com, Klook) as the passport-friendly workaround for paid venues. Third-party tickets usually still need the passport at the gate.
