The free park beside Qingyang Palace on the western ring road (the temple was split off from it in 1982 — two separate sites now): bonsai and camellia gardens, tea under the trees, the Shufeng Yayun theatre at its Qintai Road gate, and the Twelve Bridges martyrs' memorial. The memorial honours the 36 Communists, progressives and student patriots the retreating Nationalist secret police shot on the night of 7 December 1949 (district gazetteer), weeks before the city changed hands. Historically the home of the city's spring flower fair and lantern festival.

Beat the crowds
Evenings before the 20:00 show and weekend afternoons are the busy times; the flower-fair and lantern season (around Spring Festival, when held) is the one time it is crowded.
