The Bund in Half a Day: Which Buildings You Can Actually Enter

Decision5 compared
THE BUND IN HALF A DAY: WHICH BUILDINGS YOU CAN ACTUALLY ENTER · SHANGHAI

Decide which Bund buildings you can actually enter, not just which façades to photograph. Most historic interiors still serve offices or businesses, so choose the accessible stops first and save the riverfront for better light.

The short answer

Ifyou want to get inside the buildings, not just look at themthen

Only one of them needs planning; the rest sort themselves out on the day. Free and walk straight in: the Rockbund Art Museum from Wednesday to Friday, the 1926 banking hall at 299 Sichuan Middle Road daily 10:00-17:00, the China Securities Museum from Tuesday to Sunday, and the Bank of China banking hall at No. 23 on bank hours. Free but booked, weekdays only: the former HSBC Building at No. 12. At the hotel's discretion: the Peace Hotel lobby at No. 20. Not at all: the Customs House at No. 13, which is a working customs office.

Ifyou want the HSBC hall - the octagonal room and the mosaic domethen

Book before the trip, not during it. There are two half-hour slots, 11:30-12:00 and 12:00-12:30, on weekdays only, reportedly 30 people each, through the 浦发银行 or 遇见浦发 WeChat official accounts; there are no regular weekend slots, and special open days are announced separately. Whether a foreign phone number can register is not documented, so try early and ask your hotel if it fails. Once you have a place, do not go to the riverfront door: the visitor entrance is the side door at 36 Fuzhou Road, behind the building.

Ifyou are picking which day to do the Bundthen

Avoid Monday and Tuesday if you want interiors: the Rockbund Art Museum loses both - closed Monday, members-only Tuesday - and the China Securities Museum closes Mondays. Avoid the weekend for the HSBC hall, which runs on weekdays only. That leaves Wednesday to Friday as the day when everything on this page that can be entered is open at once, and it is also when the Rockbund is calmest.

Ifyou are timing the eveningthen

The Bund lights run 19:00-23:00 from May to September and 18:00-22:00 from October to April, extended and fuller at weekends and on major holidays, while weekday lighting is only partial. In November sunset is about 17:00 and the lights come on an hour after dark, so aim for 18:00-21:00. On national holidays the police run one-way pedestrian flow on the promenade - budget double the time and do not book a tight dinner after.

Ifyou want the photograph of the Bund, or you are crossing to Pudongthen

The best photograph of the Bund's own facades is taken from the Pudong riverside, not from the Bund. Cross on metro line 2, one stop from East Nanjing Road to Lujiazui, or on the 2-yuan ferry from Jinling East Road to Dongchang Road, which lands you straight on the Pudong promenade. Do not pay 50 yuan for the Sightseeing Tunnel to make the same crossing under strobe lights.

None - it is a public promenade. But the city culture bureau's Bund-wide note (2026-07-08) says some heritage venues run strict reservation systems: book on official channels before you go, and expect no flash, no large luggage and no food or drink inside them · 2026-09-10

Sunrise to about 9am is quiet and soft-lit; from late afternoon to lights-off it is shoulder to shoulder. The best photograph of the Bund's own facades is taken from the Pudong side, not from here. On national holidays the police run one-way pedestrian flow - budget double the time · 2026-09-10
Don't get this wrong
Not the North Bund in Hongkou over Suzhou Creek, and not the Rockbund lanes behind the buildings: this is the 1.5 km promenade on Zhongshan East 1st Road · 2026-09-10
The thing everyone means by 'the Bund' is free, always open, and the only part of it you are guaranteed to get into. No queue for the building itself; crowds follow the general Bund tide. Time your walk to the top of the hour for the chimes. The 2025 opening was billed as a farewell before a centennial restoration, so scaffolding would not be a surprise · 2026-09-10
Don't get this wrong
Interior photos online all come from the limited autumn 2025 opening - normally you see only the outside. And the clock does not play the tune: 'The East Is Red' has been a loudspeaker recording since May 2003, because the clockwork physically cannot play it · 2026-09-10
The Bund's voice rather than a visit: the 1927 customs house, still a customs office, whose loudspeakers give the river the hour. It went to 79.2 m overall - block plus tower - precisely to top the HSBC dome next door, and that rivalry is the thing to look at from the pavement. You cannot go in: the one public opening, in autumn 2025, sold out in minutes and was billed as a farewell before a centennial restoration.

Crowds are not the problem, the quota is - book the moment it opens. Inside, the tour itself is uncrowded. Photography is at the guards' discretion: no tripods, no flash · 2026-09-10
Don't get this wrong
Not an HSBC branch: Bund 12 is now Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, so you book with that bank. And the bronze lions at the door are replicas - the originals are in the Shanghai History Museum · 2026-09-10
The one great Bund interior a visitor can actually book, and the reason this page exists. The 1923 dome was once called 'the finest building between the Suez and the Bering Strait', and the 33 mosaic panels under it were painted over for decades until a 1997 restoration uncovered them. But the door is narrow: weekdays only, two half-hour slots at lunchtime, reportedly 30 people each, booked through a Chinese bank's WeChat official accounts that may refuse a foreign phone number. Plan it into the trip; do not count on it.

Not the striped Swatch Art Peace Hotel at No. 19 next door - the Peace Hotel is the green-pyramid tower at Bund No. 20 · 2026-09-10
A hotel first, and that is the whole rule for getting in: the 1929 Sassoon House lobby is walkable because the hotel allows it, not because anyone published a right. Shanghai & Hong Kong Museum of Banking History:Possibly the Bund's best free walk-in interior, and where this page sends you if the HSBC booking fails: the 1926 East Asia Building's original banking hall on Sichuan Middle Road, two minutes behind the riverfront. The 24-metre marble counter, the wall panels and the floor are 1926 originals, the vault keeps its American Mosler door, and a black-and-white spiral staircase runs up to the second floor. No ticket, no reservation, daily 10:00-17:00, last entry 16:30 - just register at the door. Twenty minutes, and do not expect English beyond the captions. Free walk-in is the 2025 policy, so ignore older guides describing a Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday booking system. the fallback for anyone who could not book the HSBC hall - 299 Sichuan Middle Road, near Jiujiang Road.

China Securities Museum (former Astor House Hotel):The other free walk-in, at the far north end: the former Astor House Hotel at 15 Huangpu Road, just over Waibaidu Bridge. Founded in 1846, the surviving wings built 1908-1911; China's earliest electric lights switched on here in 1882, Chaplin and Bernard Shaw stayed, and the Peacock Hall ballroom was the Shanghai Stock Exchange's first trading floor from 1990 to 1997. A national securities museum since 2018: free, Tue-Sun 9:30-16:00 and to 16:30 at weekends and on holidays, closed Mondays, and individuals need no reservation - just the security check. The building is the interest; the exhibits are for finance people. Free luggage storage by the ground-floor desk, which is the fix for the Bund-wide 'no large luggage in heritage venues' rule. the north end of the Bund walk, right after Waibaidu Bridge - and do not navigate to the Pudong Hall, which takes group bookings only.

Bank of China Building:The one Bund tower with Chinese design in its DNA, and you can walk into it for nothing: Bund No. 23, finished in 1937 by Lu Qianshou with Palmer & Turner, under a green-glazed pyramidal roof with bracket-set eaves and openwork lattice windows. It is still a working Bank of China branch, so the banking hall keeps bank hours - weekdays 9:00-17:00, weekends 10:00-16:00 - and inside are black-marble counters laid out as the character 中, sixteen octagonal marble columns and an 'Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea' motif in the bronze ceiling ornament. Security at the door, no photographing the counters, no lingering: five minutes, quietly. five minutes on the way past, in bank hours - it is a branch, not a museum.

Binjiang Avenue (Lujiazui riverside):The answer to 'where do I photograph the Bund': not from the Bund. The Pudong promenade, from the Museum of Art Pudong down to the Dongchang Road ferry pier, shows the whole lit facade in one sweep - free, quieter than the Bund itself, and with no official closing time. The cheapest way over is the 2-yuan ferry from Jinling East Road, which lands you on the promenade; the hour after lights-on is the crush, and it thins out south of the ferry pier. If you would rather be above the river than across it, our observation-decks page compares the three Lujiazui towers. the second half of a Bund evening - cross, then look back.

Bund Sightseeing Tunnel:Draft entry - our wording is not final. The glass capsule under the river, from the Bund promenade to the foot of the Oriental Pearl, is the most searched 'is this a scam' attraction in Shanghai, and the short answer is that it is a 50-yuan river crossing dressed as a ride: 2.5 to 5 minutes of strobe lights through a 646.7 m tunnel, against 4 yuan for one stop on metro line 2 or 2 yuan for the ferry. Neither the price nor the hours have any official text - platforms give three bundled tiers at 50 / 90 / 130 yuan and daily 9:00-22:30. The city's 'One River, One Creek' five-year plan of August 2026 says, verbatim, that the tunnel's renovation is to be promoted, with no dates, so hoardings would not be a surprise. skip it - the three better ways across the river are on our river-crossing page. → See “How to Cross the River”
