Shanghai Library East
A 2022 public library built like a floating carved stone — seven floors of reading rooms, terraces and exhibitions in Century Park's culture cluster, sharing a metro station with the Shanghai Museum East. Free, no ticket, no reservation, and open till 20:30 on the lower floors; the top-floor rare-book gallery closes at 17:00. The best free interior in Pudong.
No entry reservation (municipal response, July 2024). **Security check on entry; anything larger than 20×14 cm must go in a locker — large bags, trolleys and scooters are named.** The 484 seats of the 3F Reading Plaza need an online seat reservation; ordinary seats on other floors do not — only the small bookable rooms on the same seat-booking page (4F quiet-study room, 5F deep-study room, seven group study pods) are reserved. Only borrowing needs a registered reader card. No entry ID is required by the rules. No tourist guiding inside; handheld photos for personal use allowed, no flash, tripods or scanners, and no photographing staff or readers without consent (official reader rules, titled 'provisional')Verified · 2026-09Source ↗
Weekend afternoons and school holidays are a study hall for local families and seats vanish; weekday mornings are easiest. You do not need a seat to see the building — one loop is enough.
Bilingual signage throughout; English website; no English tour stated
