City Wall: Walk, Ride or Night?

Decision2 compared
CITY WALL: WALK, RIDE OR NIGHT? · XI'AN

Choose whether the Xi’an wall is a walk, a bike ride or an evening photo stop. Distance, rental rules and late exits change the plan, so let fitness and the light you want decide before you climb.

The short answer

Ifit is your first time, you have two hours and you want the lit wall in your photosthen

Book the ¥54 ticket on the mini-program the night before (passport holders swap it for a paper voucher at the gate window), go up at the South Gate after 17:00, walk the south stretch on foot and stay for the lights — the top there is open to 22:00. Come down at Wenchang Men or through the South Gate's night-watch exit. No bike, no show ticket.

Ifyou have half a daythen

Wall ticket for 8:00, hire a bike at the South Gate stands and ride the loop clockwise — 90 minutes riding, two hours with photos, inside the 3-hour hire — with a bottle filled at the South Gate; or walk the south stretch to Wenchang Men and come down for the Beilin Museum.

Ifyou are with children or older parentsthen

Ramps at the main gates lead to a flat brick top, so the walk itself is easy; go at 8:00 or after 17:00, never at midday in July-August, and count on toilets only at the gate towers. Children should not be on their own hire bikes — tandems are the family option — and the electric sightseeing carts from the main gates are the choice for anyone who cannot ride (price: ask at the stand). The Bell Tower's stairs are steep.

Ifthe mini-program defeats you and you have no bookingthen

Go to a gate ticket window — since July 2026 the operator's own notice sends foreign visitors there: book online first if you can (the hotel desk can do it to your passport number the night before), then swap the booking for a paper voucher with the passport; the windows also sell for cash. If even that fails, the moat park below the wall and Shuncheng Lane inside it need no ticket, and the lit South Gate can be photographed from the square.

Ifyou want the wall without the crowdthen

The west and north sides are empty at any hour; the south stretch on a weekend afternoon is the crowd, and on a bike it is a slalom through pedestrians. Avoid the 15th of the month, the residents' free day, when the wall is fuller for everyone. From the South Gate at 8:00 the south stretch clears of walkers by the east gate.

Ifyou are in Xi'an between New Year and late Marchthen

The lantern fair (1 January-22 March in 2026) turns the south stretch into a separately ticketed light show: the ¥54 ticket does not cover the core zone — top up ¥46 (students ¥23) or buy the ¥100 fair ticket (half ¥50) — resident discounts do not apply to visitors, and it replaces the usual evening programme at the South Gate; check the mini-program's fair prices before booking a January-March night.

Ifyou actually want the 'Dream of Chang'an' ceremonythen

Ask the hotel to check the week's programme on the mini-program's performances menu, or call 029-87272792; holiday evenings are when it is most likely to be on. If it is, the barbican fills 30 minutes before — or watch it free over the parapet from the wall top above the South Gate.

步行登城(城墙票)
Which gate
The South Gate (Yongning Men): Metro Line 2 Yongningmen, exits A1 / D1 open onto the gate square; the ramparts are widest there, the bike hire busiest, the evening shows staged, and it is open to 22:00 against 20:00 at most other gates. Eight places to climb, per the operator's page — Changle (E), Yongning (S), Anding (W), Anyuan (N), plus Heping, Wenchang, Hanguang and Shangde Men — 'buy at the nearest and climb' · 2026-01-07
Ticket (+ bike / show)
¥54, half ¥27 (media / platform, 2025-26 — no official price line was found); one ticket per ID per day; it covers the whole 13.7 km circuit from any gate and lets you off and on at other gates the same day (media guide); the Hanguang Men Site Museum on the west stretch counts as inside it (inferred from the operator's site). Bikes and the ceremony are extra; the lantern fair (1 January-22 March in 2026) needs a ¥46 top-up on this ticket for the core zone, or its own ¥100 ticket · 2025-09-19
Booking & passport
WeChat mini-program 西安城墙景区 (Douyin and Meituan also sell), up to 7 days ahead, real-name to an ID number. Since 1 July 2026 the QR-code lane is closed: Chinese ID holders swipe the card or use face recognition; foreign and HK-Macao-Taiwan visitors book online with the passport, take it to a gate ticket window for a paper voucher, and enter on voucher scan plus face check — the windows also sell for cash (operator notice, July 2026). The mini-program is Chinese-only and needs a WeChat account with a linked payment method; if it defeats you, the window or the hotel desk is the workaround. Concessions and the residents' free day are Chinese-document only. Service line 029-87272792 · 2026-07-02
Time & effort
Flat brick, 13.7 km round, 12 m high, 15 m wide on top; ramps at the main gates lead up. Walking the whole circuit is three to four hours; most people do the south stretch gate to gate and come down at Wenchang Men for the Beilin Museum. No shade and no water on top: toilets and shops at the gate towers only, nothing for a kilometre at a time between them · 2026-09-11
When to go
Up at 8:00 or after 17:00 — the top has no shade and July-August at midday is a mistake; the evening ticket at the South Gate gives you the lit wall and the towers, top open to 22:00 there (six southern points to 22:00, the rest to 20:00 — platform, Jan 2026). Five gates keep a night watch so you can get down after closing: South Gate north side, Changle, Anyuan, Anding and Zhongshan Men. No seasonal hours are published for the wall; the lantern fair (1 January-22 March in 2026) alters evening access · 2026-09-11
Crowds
Weekend afternoons on the south stretch are the crowd; the west and north sides are empty at any hour. The 15th of each month is a free day for Xi'an residents only (5,000 tickets, checked against a Xi'an ID card) — fuller, not cheaper, for a visitor; avoid it · 2026-09-11

Every first-timer: the South Gate stretch at dusk is the must-see; the whole circuit on foot is for walkers with an afternoon
A brick platform 13.7 km long: impressive for the first half-hour, then a long walk in the sun. Do the South Gate stretch at dusk on the evening ticket, come down at Wenchang Men or through the South Gate's night-watch exit, and skip it entirely at midday in summer: there is no shade and no water between the gate towers. The ticket is the trap, not the wall: a Chinese mini-program tied to your ID number, then (since July 2026) a window swap for a paper voucher and a face check for passport holders; book the night before or hand it to the hotel desk, and allow ten minutes at the window. Do not mistake the free moat park below or Shuncheng Lane inside for the wall walk: those need no ticket, the top does.

By bike (hire on top)

城上骑行(租车)
Which gate
Stands on the wall top at the four main gates and Hanguang Men (media / platform lists); the South Gate stands, a few hundred metres either side of the gate tower, keep the longest hours — climb there (Metro Line 2 Yongningmen A1 / D1). The shared bikes on the streets below cannot go up · 2026-09-11
Ticket (+ bike / show)
On top of the ¥54 wall ticket: single ¥45 / 3 h, tandem ¥90 / 3 h, deposit ¥100 a bike refunded on return; overtime ¥5 per 10 minutes on a single, ¥10 on a tandem (Bendibao listing — the operator has no price page). Electric sightseeing carts also run the loop from the main gates (media guide); prices not on any page we could read · 2026-09-11
Booking & passport
No booking and no app for the bikes: pay at the stand on the wall, cash or phone scan; the wall ticket underneath is the mini-program hurdle. How the deposit is taken — cash, scan, document — and whether a passport is held as surety is not published: carry ¥100-200 in cash. Stand staff speak little English; the price board at the South Gate is bilingual · 2026-09-11
Time & effort
13.7 km of uneven, jolting brick: about 90 minutes riding without stops, two hours with photos — the 3-hour hire fits one loop comfortably, not two, and a slow photo loop can run into overtime. Not for young children on their own bikes; tandems are the family option. No shade, water or toilets between the gate towers, roughly every 3 km · 2026-09-11
When to go
South Gate stands to about 22:00 in season, other gates' stands around 20:00 (platform — seasons differ; ask the hour when you hire so the return is not shut). Ride clockwise at 8:00 to keep the sun behind you on the long west and north stretches; anticlockwise from 17:00 to finish at the lit South Gate. Rain or ice closes the stands and makes the brick slick — the wall ticket is still valid for walking, and assume no refund on a hire cut short · 2025-09-19
Crowds
Weekend afternoons the south stretch is a slalom through pedestrians; from the South Gate at 8:00 or from 17:00 it clears of walkers by the time you reach the east gate, and the west and north sides are empty · 2026-09-11
Best for
Anyone who wants the whole circuit in the time of a long walk and can handle a heavy hire bike; families on tandems
The one thing every first-timer asks about, and great for an hour, punishing for three: bumpy brick, sun and a saddle built for the average tourist. If you have never ridden a heavy hire bike, do the south stretch only — ride south-east to Wenchang Men and back — and hand it back; if you want the loop, go at 8:00, carry water, and keep the 3-hour slot in mind because overtime is charged by the 10 minutes. The traps: the deposit method is not published, so bring cash; the return rule for handing back at another gate is not published, so ask when you hire; and other gates' stands close around 20:00, so a late loop ends at a shut stand.

The South Gate evening shows:A pageant for tour groups whose schedule we could not confirm on any current page: the only official listing is the wall website's shop, ¥260, Thursday to Sunday, 'coming soon', with a 2016-17 copyright. Enjoy it if it happens to be on — the barbican fills 30 minutes before — and never plan an evening around it. people already on the wall top after dark; anyone whose hotel has confirmed the week's programme on the mini-program.

Shuncheng Lane, at the foot of the wall:The free lane inside the foot of the wall for the whole 13.7 km — cafés, guesthouses and courtyard doors on the south stretch from the South Gate east to Wenchang Gate (1.2 km), ending at the Beilin's side; no ticket, always open, cafés roughly 10:00-22:00. The walk between sights and the free way to have the wall beside you: the wall's steps come down into it at every gate, so walk a stretch on top, come down and finish here for coffee — but do not plan an hour here on its own, and walk it in the late afternoon when the wall throws shade into the lane.

Pairing with the Bell Tower:The other lit view: in the current long season (1 April-10 October) the tower is open 8:30-21:30 with last entry 21:00 and the evening ticket is the point — ¥30, ¥50 with the Drum Tower, sold on the museum's WeChat official account 西安钟鼓楼 (book ahead — compulsory on holidays; the gate sells on ordinary days by a 2024 listing), reached only by the underpass from the roundabout corners (Metro Line 2 Zhonglou); from 11 October it closes at 18:00, so seasons differ and there is no night view in winter. Allow 30-40 minutes upstairs and go at dusk; the tower's last entry is 21:00 while the South Gate wall top is open to 22:00, so on one evening the tower goes first and the wall second — or spend the ¥30 on lamb and photograph the tower from the underpass exits.
