Xi'an City Wall
The Ming rampart of 1370-78, 13.7 km around the old city, 12 m high and 15 m wide on top — the most complete city wall left in China and the one thing in Xi'an you can ride a bicycle round. One ticket (¥54, half ¥27) covers the whole circuit from any gate with a ticket hall; the South Gate (Yongning Men, Metro Line 2 Yongningmen station, exits A1/D1) is where the ramparts are widest, the bike hire busiest and the evening shows staged, and it is open to 22:00 against 20:00 at most other gates. Tickets are sold on the '西安城墙景区' WeChat mini-program; since 1 July 2026 the turnstiles read Chinese ID cards or faces, and a foreign visitor swaps the online booking for a paper voucher at a gate ticket window (operator notice) — so the booking flow, not the wall, is the hurdle.
WeChat mini-program 西安城墙景区 (Douyin and Meituan also sell), up to 7 days ahead, real-name; since 1 July 2026 there is no QR-code entry — Chinese ID-card swipe or face recognition at the turnstile; foreign and HK-Macao-Taiwan visitors book online, then swap the booking for a paper voucher at a gate ticket window with the passport they booked on, and enter by voucher scan plus face check; the windows also sell for cash (operator notice, July 2026). Real-name entry; passport holders use the staffed window. Real-name, booked to an ID number. The July 2026 operator notice names foreign and HK-Macao-Taiwan visitors: book online, exchange it for a paper voucher at a gate ticket window with the document you booked on (passport), then voucher scan plus face check at the turnstile; Chinese ID-card swipe or face recognition is the standard entry since 1 July 2026 and the ticket QR code is no longer accepted. Concessions are Chinese documents only: over-65 free needs a Xi'an / Shaanxi / home-province senior card; half price is for 6-18s, full-time students to bachelor level and retired soldiers. There is no concession for foreign seniors (listing, Aug 2026); see the city tips note on concessions.
WeChat → 西安城墙景区 mini-program → date (within 7 days) → adult ¥54 → name and passport number → pay → at the gate: Chinese ID holders swipe the card or use face recognition; passport holders go to the gate ticket window, show the passport, get a paper voucher, then voucher scan plus face check at the turnstile (operator notice, July 2026 — no QR code since 1 July); the same ticket lets you off and on at other gates the same day (media guide).
Up at 8:00 or after 17:00: the top has no shade, and the evening ticket at the South Gate gives you the lit wall and the towers. Weekend afternoons on the south stretch are the crowd; the west and north sides are empty at any hour.
Bilingual signs on the wall and at the South Gate; the mini-program is Chinese-only.
