Evening: Where to Go?

Decision4 compared
EVENING: WHERE TO GO? · CHENGDU

Choose between Sichuan opera, a night boat, Jiuyanqiao bars and a Taikoo Li stroll. Shows and cruises lock you to a schedule; nightlife and shopping are flexible, so decide first whether you want a performance, drinks or an easy evening.

The short answer

Ifyou have one evening, you book with a passport and no Chinese phone number, and you do not drinkthen

The 18:00-18:30 boat from Dongmen Wharf (Trip.com or Klook, voucher at the ticket office) and then the 20:00 Shufeng Yayun show (Trip.com, collect by name at 132 Qintai Road, doors 19:30). Only the first boat leaves time for both — the wharf is at Line 2 Dongmen Bridge, the show at Line 5 Qingyang Palace. On a weekday you can usually skip the boat queue and buy the show at the desk.

Ifyou are bringing children or someone who walks slowlythen

The show: child tickets, no dialogue to follow, 90 minutes seated with a tea, sit in the front third so they see the masks flip. The boat: under 1.2 m free with an adult, life-jackets compulsory, an open deck boarded down a few steps from the pontoon — no wheelchair boarding is published, and bring a jacket. Taikoo Li's lanes are flat and free for an after-dinner walk. Not the bar street.

Ifthe show is sold out or you could not book onlinethen

Holiday weeks add an 18:00 sitting (big holidays 14:00 and 16:00), and on an ordinary weekday the desk at 132 Qintai Road usually has same-day tickets up to an hour before. For the boat, watch the same lights free from Anshun Bridge and Hejiang Pavilion at dusk — our entry says they are better lit from the shore. The 339 deck is shut, so the riverside below is the free version of that too.

Ifyou want to avoid the crowdsthen

A weekday, and the early boat: the 18:00-18:30 departure in dusk light before the 19:30 rush, or a rainy night when the lights still run. The show is a full house of tour groups every night — a weekday is merely less full. Jiuyanqiao on a weeknight is a different, quieter street. Taikoo Li has no quiet evening at all; Kuanzhai empties after 21:00.

Ifyou want a drink with the river lit upthen

Jiuyanqiao: our entry's own 'standard evening' is a boat at 19:00 and a Lan Kwai Fong terrace at 20:00, a terrace beer ¥40-80, walk-ins early. Never follow an invitation into a bar, ask the bottle price before it is opened, pay by QR at the table; Line 13 runs to about 23:00, after that use a ride-hailing app.

Ifyou want an evening that costs nothingthen

Taikoo Li's lanes around the walls of Daci Temple at any hour, dinner on Huaxing or Tangba Street; Anshun Bridge and Hejiang Pavilion from the bank at dusk; the Mengzhuiwan riverside under the lit 339 tower; Kuanzhai after 21:00.

Ifit is rainingthen

The show is indoors and unaffected. The boat sails in rain and is not refundable unless the operator stops sailing (storm, high water, official control) — it is an open deck, bring a jacket, and the crowd is thinner. The bar terraces and the lanes are your own call.

Shufeng Yayun show

蜀风雅韵
When it starts
Nightly 20:00, doors 19:30; holidays add an 18:00 sitting, big holidays 14:00 and 16:00 (the show's own timetable page); no dark day published — nightly year-round · 2025-03-18
Price
About ¥80-260 adult and ¥70-160 child by seat tier — platform figures, the show's own site prints no prices. Four grades (VIP, then A / B / C class); every ticket includes a lidded cup of tea per person and sunflower seeds per table; dearer packages add a back massage, ear-cleaning, a souvenir, a costume try-on or a snack set · 2026-09-11
How to buy (passport / foreign card)
Ticket desk at 132 Qintai Road — the Culture Park gate — up to an hour before the show, or online: Trip.com lists it in English for a foreign card; the company's own Chinese site takes WeChat / Alipay only. Collect by booking name at the desk; no document requirement published; no Chinese phone number needed · 2025-12-15
How long
Ninety minutes; sit in the front third — the masks flip in a blink and the back rows see a blur, and the fire-spitting is also front-of-house · 2026-09-11
English
No dialogue to follow — acrobatics, puppets, music and the face-change; announcements are in Chinese, programmes are bilingual in places · 2026-09-11
Crowds
A full house of tour groups every night; the 20:00 show sells out on holiday weeks (extra sittings added), and the VIP and A tiers with the ear-cleaning go first. On an ordinary weekday a same-day ticket at the desk is usually possible · 2026-09-11
Best for
First-timers who want face-changing in one sitting; families with children; anyone who does not drink and wants a seat, a tea and a show
The show every tour bus goes to, and the easiest way to see face-changing, fire-spitting, the rolling lamp and the puppets in one 90-minute sitting with a tea at your elbow. Do not go on a holiday week without a ticket — the 20:00 show sells out and the extra sittings fill with coaches; on a weekday you can usually buy at the desk an hour before. The traps: the company's own Chinese booking site takes only WeChat / Alipay, so a foreign card books on Trip.com and collects by name at the park gate; and every price here is a platform's, the show prints none. The trade-off: it is a produced tourist variety show, not an evening of Sichuan opera — for that, the Saturday 14:00 excerpts at the Yuelai Teahouse are the other end of the same question, and they are not an evening.

Jinjiang night cruise

夜游锦江
When it starts
Rolling departures about 18:00-22:20 from Dongmen Wharf, boats leave when full, check-in 20 minutes before (platform rules); year-round, stops for storms, high water or maintenance. The 'party boat' added on 14 August 2026 (20:00-21:30, every 50 minutes) is a different, louder product · 2026-09-11
Price
About ¥118 for the Dongmen round trip (Qunar / Ctrip 2026), Klook ¥138 valid from any wharf; children under 1.2 m free but must sit with an adult. The standard boat has no tea — the tea and hotpot boats (¥168 / ¥598) sail from the south-section wharf 8 km away, not from Dongmen. All figures are platforms': the operator prints prices only inside its WeChat mini-program · 2026-09-11
How to buy (passport / foreign card)
The operator's own channel is the 夜游锦江 WeChat mini-program — real-name, and it wants a Chinese phone number. The workaround is real: Trip.com and Klook sell the same boat in English for a card, and you exchange the voucher at the Dongmen ticket office within opening hours. No passport rule is published and nobody reports being refused; no cash queue reported either · 2025-01-22
How long
About 30-40 minutes for the Dongmen loop — Lan Kwai Fong, Hejiang Pavilion, Anshun Covered Bridge, Shuijingfang Wharf, Jiuyanqiao and back (Klook says about 30, Sichuan Daily about 40); Music Square and Shuijingfang wharves run shorter loops for the same money · 2026-08-14
English
Booking, yes — fully in English on Trip.com / Klook. On board, no: the commentary and the light-show narration are Chinese, the loop is self-explanatory; ticket-office staff handle vouchers with little English · 2026-09-11
Crowds
Boats fill on Friday-Sunday and every holiday from 19:30; go on a weekday, or take the 18:00-18:30 boat in dusk light and skip the queue. Rain thins it out and the lights still run · 2026-09-11
Best for
First-timers with no Chinese phone number; non-drinkers who want the lit river without the bar street; families; the 19:00 boat before a terrace or the 18:00 boat before the show
Short, pretty and fully bookable in English: the one Chengdu night experience that needs no Chinese phone, which is why it is where a first evening starts. It is also 30-40 minutes for ¥118, in a crowd, with a Chinese-only soundtrack, on an open deck. Do not take a Friday-Sunday or holiday boat after 19:30 unless you like queues; do not book the tea or hotpot boat expecting to sail from Dongmen (those leave from the south-section wharf 8 km away); and do not expect a refund on a rainy night that still sails — bring a jacket. The trade-off with the bank is free: Anshun Bridge and Hejiang Pavilion at dusk are better lit from the shore, and the boat is worth it only for the Lan Kwai Fong terraces and the projections you cannot see from land.

Jiuyanqiao bar street

九眼桥Open the place →
When it starts
Dead before 20:00. Hours are the bars': most open 18:00-20:00 and run to 2:00, clubs later; nothing is checked at street level and there is no gate. Line 13 Jiuyanqiao station runs to about 23:00, after that it is taxis — use a ride-hailing app, not the cars waiting outside the clubs · 2026-09-11
Price
Public street, no ticket; bar minimum spends vary. A river-terrace beer at Lan Kwai Fong runs ¥40-80, a club table with a bottle several hundred to a few thousand; the south-bank strip is cheaper and older (our entry's own rule-of-thumb figures) · 2026-09-11
How to buy (passport / foreign card)
Nothing to book and no gate. Most bars take Alipay / WeChat; foreign cards only at the hotel-style venues. The local rule our entry repeats: never follow anyone who invites you into a bar, never let strangers order, ask the price of a bottle before it is opened, pay by QR at the table and check the amount on the screen · 2026-09-11
How long
Not checked — our entry has no duration; its 'standard evening' is a boat at 19:00 then a terrace at 20:00, the night boats passing right under the terraces · 2026-09-11
English
Not checked — our entry says nothing about English at the bars · 2026-09-11
Crowds
Packed 22:00-1:00 on Friday-Saturday and every holiday eve, with touts and 'drinks-bill' scams on holiday nights that the city itself warns about; a weeknight is a different, quieter street, and the Lan Kwai Fong terraces take walk-ins early · 2026-09-11
Best for
Drinkers who want a river terrace and people-watching; not children, not anyone looking for old Chengdu
Nightlife, not heritage: a generic bar strip with a good river view, tourist prices and, on holiday nights, touts. Go for a terrace beer and the lights — our entry's own evening is the boat at 19:00 and a Lan Kwai Fong terrace at 20:00, since the boats pass right under it. Do not go on a Friday, Saturday or holiday eve expecting quiet, never follow an invitation into a bar, and check the bill before the bottle is opened. The trade-off with the show and the boat is simple: this is the only one of the four with alcohol at its centre and nothing to see but the river, and the bridge you stand on is a 1988 road bridge — the nine-arch stone replica is 1.9 km downstream and worth the walk in daylight, not at night.

成都太古里Open the place →
When it starts
The lanes are open at all hours; shops about 10:00-22:00 (platform listings — the operator's site could not be read, go by the doors). Daci Temple's evening hours: not checked · 2026-09-11
Price
Free to walk, by consumption; the restaurants inside are chain and hotel prices — eat on Huaxing Street (north, past Chunxi Road) or Tangba Street (east, 5 minutes) · 2026-09-11
How to buy (passport / foreign card)
Nothing to book — the lanes are public space. The big-brand stores take foreign cards; the coffee kiosks in the lanes are QR-pay, so have Alipay set up · 2026-09-11
How long
Not checked — our entry has no duration; it calls the block the natural pivot of a Chunxi Road half-day, with the temple on one side, the IFS panda across Hongxing Road and the Tangba Street cafés out the back · 2026-09-11
English
Not checked — our entry says nothing about signage; the Fangsuo bookshop underground has an English-language section · 2026-09-11
Crowds
Every evening and every weekend afternoon the main lanes are the crush; the only empty hour is before 10:00, when the temple next door is at its quietest — there is no quiet evening here · 2026-09-11
Best for
Non-drinkers who want a lit evening walk that costs nothing; families; architecture people; dinner on the next street
The free evening: an open-air quarter of grey-tiled pitched roofs and glass laid out as lanes around the 1,300-year-old Daci Temple, whose walls and gate you keep meeting between the shopfronts. It is the one mall in China that architecture people come to see. Do not come for quiet (every evening is the crush on the main lanes) and do not eat inside (chain and hotel prices; Huaxing Street and Tangba Street are the local answer). It is still a luxury mall (the brands are the same as everywhere), so come for the plan, the temple walls and the Fangsuo bookshop underground, and spend your money on the next street. The trade-off with the other three is that there is nothing to buy a ticket for and nothing that starts at a fixed hour; whether the temple itself opens in the evening our entry does not say.

339 TV Tower:Not a ticket right now: the 339 tower's observation deck and revolving restaurant have been shut since July 2025 — the operator went into bankruptcy liquidation and no reopening date has been given (media citing the provincial complaints platform; Ctrip shows it suspended). The tower still lights up at night and the Mengzhuiwan riverside and the mall below are open as usual, so it survives as a free backdrop from the riverbank; check the platforms for a reopening notice before planning around it, and if it comes back go only on a clear evening. a riverside supper under the lit tower, no ticket — until a reopening is announced.

Kuanzhai Alleys:Worth it at night only after 21:00: the three lanes are free and public at all hours, but from noon to about 21:00 every day (and all day on weekends and holidays) they are a slow shuffle, and almost everything you see is a 2008 rebuild. Give them forty minutes late — the courtyards behind the gates keep their own hours, the ear-cleaning and table face-changing are sold at tourist prices (agree the price first), and spend your money one street west in Xiaotong Lane. a late stroll for the atmosphere, not an evening's plan.
