Which Museum First in Guangzhou?

Decision6 compared
WHICH MUSEUM FIRST IN GUANGZHOU? · GUANGZHOU

Choose your first Guangzhou museum by subject, booking and closing day. Provincial collections, city history, archaeology and art are spread across different institutions, so the biggest building may not answer your question.

The short answer

Ifyou have half a day, it is your first visit, you carry a passport and have no Chinese phone numberthen

Nanyue King tomb at 9:00 on a weekday — ¥10 at the desk with your passport (the 2026 guide says 'valid ID'; ask if the desk can also give you a lower-chamber slot), 2 hours — then one stop on Line 2 to the palace site if you booked it on WeChat (overseas visitors enter on the QR code), or straight on to the Peasant Movement Institute 400 m further, which needs nothing. Not the Guangdong Museum: its slot has to be won at 22:00 days earlier.

Ifyou are with small children or someone elderlythen

The Guangdong Museum is the one built for it — lifts, a nursing room, wheelchairs and pushchairs lent on a passport, and a walk-up lane at the group ticket booth for over-65s (whether a passport counts there is not stated) — if someone in the party can book on WeChat; under-18s and 65+ are free at the tomb but the tomb itself is stairs, and the lower chamber is 20 minutes on a quota. Zhenhai Tower is five floors of steep wooden stairs with no lift: send the family to the free annexe instead. The Peasant Movement Institute is flat courtyards with thresholds and shade.

Ifyou could not get a slot anywherethen

Three doors need no slot: the Peasant Movement Institute (no booking, no ID), the Thirteen Hongs Museum (no booking channel published — walk in with your passport) and the planning centre (no booking since July 2024). The tomb's desk sells with a document. At the Guangdong Museum only over-65s and disabled visitors register on the spot, and a paid special-exhibition ticket is a local listing's fallback, not the museum's — ring 020-38046886. Chen Clan Academy's walk-up quota is for the elderly and disabled only; others phone 020-81819653. Do not queue at the palace site's west gate: it is exit-only, and there is no desk.

Ifyou want the galleries without the crowdthen

Tomb: weekday at 9:00 opening, when the tomb chamber's first hourly slot is emptiest — weekends fill the quota by mid-morning. Palace site: weekday afternoon. Guangdong Museum: a summer evening, 18:00-20:00 slots, when it stays open to 21:00; weekend mornings are the crush. Chen Clan Academy: skip the monthly free day (16 Sep, 14 Oct, 11 Nov, 16 Dec 2026) and mid-morning tour-group hour. Zhenhai Tower: up through the park's west gate at opening, before the groups arrive at 10:00.

Ifit is a Monday, or a Tuesdaythen

Monday closes every museum on this page except Chen Clan Academy — so Monday is the Chen Clan day (unless it is a public holiday, when the Nanyue and Guangdong museums open and shift their closed day to after the holiday). Tuesday is the reverse: Chen Clan Academy is shut, everything else is open.

Ifyou are already in Zhujiang New Townthen

The Guangdong Museum is on the east side of Huacheng Square, 200 m from Zhujiang New Town station's Exit B1 — worth the WeChat effort if you have it, 2-3 hours inside, and the quiet way in is an extended summer evening. Without a slot, cross the city instead: the Nanyue tomb is the better museum anyway, and its desk takes a document.

Getting there
867 Jiefang North Road, Yuexiu: Metro Line 2 Yuexiu Park station, Exit E; the gate faces Jiefang North Road opposite the park's west side. The palace site is 2 km east — one stop on Line 2 to Gongyuanqian · 2025-12-25

Booking & passport
Real-name on the WeChat official account 南越王博物院 → 王墓展区 → 门票讲解预约, or buy at the desk 'with valid ID' (2026 guide). The guide says checks are by ID card and never names the passport — take yours to the desk and ask. No phone-number wall. Lower chamber: free ticket released 00:00 the day before on the same menu, 50 people an hour, 20 minutes inside; whether the desk can issue one to a passport holder is not published · 2025-12-25
Closed days & hours
Closed Mondays, open on public holidays; when a holiday includes a Monday the closed day shifts to the first day after (6 April 2026 open, 7 April closed). Tue-Sun 9:00-17:30, ticket sales and entry end 17:00; no summer extension here even when the palace site runs to 18:00 · 2025-12-25
How long

Best for
First-timers who want the one 'only here' in the city; passport holders without WeChat, because it has a desk
The answer to 'which first': the intact tomb of Zhao Mo, found under Xianggang hill in 1983 and left where it was, the silk-threaded jade suit and the 'Emperor Wen' gold seal, for ¥10 — the strongest 'only here' in Guangzhou. It is also the one ticketed museum here whose own guide allows buying at the desk with a document, which is what makes it the first stop for a passport holder without WeChat; the guide's wording is 'ID card', so arrive at 9:00 on a weekday, when the free 9:30 tour leaves and the tomb chamber's first hourly slot is emptiest. Two things to know: the lower chamber is a separate free quota released at midnight the day before, and without it you see the chamber from the upper level only; and the shops and 'guides' outside the gate claiming to be official are not. Closed Mondays.

Whether the form takes a passport number and a non-Chinese phone is not published. No walk-in desk · 2026-07-07
Closed days & hours
Closed Mondays, open on public holidays. Tue-Sun 9:00-17:30, entry ends 17:00; 11 July-31 August 2026 open to 18:00, last entry 17:00 · 2026-07-07
How long
Allow 90 minutes: the stone pool and winding channel under the roof, the stratigraphy wall of 13 periods, the well and the Southern Han floor · 2026-09-15
Best for
The afternoon after the tomb; people who like reading the ground; overseas visitors who can book on WeChat and want the gate to expect them
The other half of the same museum, 2 km east, and the one museum on this page whose notice names overseas visitors and tells the gate what to do with them: scan the QR code, not the ID card. What you see is ruins under a roof — the 2nd-century-BC stone pool and winding stone channel, then a wall of stratigraphy stacking every government seat that stood here for 2,000 years — strong if you like reading the ground, flat if you came for objects, which are at the tomb. Booking is WeChat only and there is no desk, so this is the second stop, not the first, and the route is one-way from the east gate to Beijing Road. Weekday afternoons are quiet; summer weekend slots go by the previous evening.

Getting there
Inside Yuexiu Park at 99 Zhenhai Road: Metro Line 2 Yuexiu Park station, Exit B2, through the main gate and uphill about 8 minutes; or Exit A to the park's west gate. Across the road from the Nanyue tomb · 2024-09-14
Ticket
¥10; ¥8 for groups of 20 or more; ¥5 half for 60-64; under-18s and 65+ free. The Zhongyuan Tower annexe at no. 105 — the export-porcelain and Canton-trade art — is free with ID (city museum table) · 2024-09-14
Booking & passport
Real-name booking and purchase on the WeChat service account 智慧广博 → 微票务 → 预约购票 (platform advice: one day ahead). Whether the window sells paid tickets to walk-ups is not published — the city table says free categories collect tickets at the manual window; passport handling at the gate not published. From abroad, the museum's website showed only a maintenance page when we checked; whether booking is still required after the city's July 2024 rule is unverified · 2026-09-15
Closed days & hours
Closed Mondays, open on public holidays (city museum table). Tue-Sun 9:00-17:30, entry ends 17:00; no summer extension was announced for 2026 · 2024-09-14
How long
Worth an hour, not a morning: five floors of cases in a 1380 tower with steep wooden stairs and no lift · 2026-09-15
Best for
The view down the old city's axis; the export art in the free annexe if time is short; the lighter half of a Yuexiu Park day with the tomb
The city museum since 1929, in the five-storey tower Zhu Liangzu put on the Ming wall in 1380 — and the reason to climb is the fifth floor, looking south over the park and the Memorial Hall's blue roof to the river. It is small and stair-bound, worth an hour, and the part most relevant to a Western visitor is not the tower but the free Zhongyuan Tower annexe next door with the Canton enamels, armorial porcelain and export paintings. Booking runs on WeChat and nothing we could read says what the window does with a passport, so treat it as the add-on across the road from the tomb, not the plan; if the museum is shut, the wall and the cannon terrace outside are in the free park anyway. Closed Mondays.

WeChat official account 广东省博物馆 is 'our only booking channel': real-name, time-slotted, everyone including children; tickets drop at 22:00 (the local listing says for the seventh day ahead, 25,000 a day in summer); one order per account every 14 days, at most 5 people; two consecutive or three no-shows mean a 90-day ban. The entry rule is a self-service ID-card check at the west gate; passports are accepted for the audio guide and wheelchairs, but passport use in the form and at the gate is not published. The one door without the app: 65+, disabled visitors and servicemen register on the spot at the group ticket booth. Info 020-38046886 · 2026-09-15
Closed days & hours
Closed Mondays except public holidays. Tue-Sun 9:00-17:00, entry to 16:00; extended to 21:00 (entry 20:00) 1 July-30 August and 25-27 September 2026, posted under the 公告 (notices) tab · 2026-09-15
How long
Allow 2-3 hours for five permanent galleries — but the natural-resources, marine and palaeontology halls were shut for works in summer 2026; check the 公告 (notices) tab before promising a child the dinosaurs · 2026-09-15
Best for
Anyone who can work WeChat and is online at 22:00 seven nights ahead; families with a summer evening; the Canton-trade story in one building
The big one — Chaozhou woodcarving, Duan inkstones, export porcelain and the Guangdong history galleries in the 2010 red 'treasure box' on Huacheng Square — and the hardest door on this page for a foreign visitor: WeChat is the museum's only channel, every visitor including children needs a real-name slot, tickets drop at 22:00 and go within minutes in summer, one order per account per fortnight, and the entry rule is written as an ID-card check at the west gate. Its own pages take a passport for the audio guide and a wheelchair, so carry it and expect the staffed lane; whether the form takes a passport number nobody has published, and there is no English site to ask. If you cannot book, the two published safety valves are the walk-up lane for over-65s and disabled visitors and a paid special-exhibition ticket (by a local listing, not the museum). Do not build a Monday around it; do build a summer evening around it, when the 18:00-20:00 slots are the easiest to get.

Ticket
¥10 adults; students and 60-64 ¥5; under 18, 65+ and under 1.2 m free. One free day a month in 2026 — the museum asks you to book on WeChat even then · 2024-09-14
Booking & passport
Real-name on the WeChat official account 广东民间工艺博物馆, tickets up to 7 days ahead (city table; a platform guide adds 6 per account per day); the museum keeps a daily walk-up quota for the elderly and disabled only, and says others in special cases should ask at the service desk (综合服务处) or phone 020-81819653 (museum notice, July 2024). The gate reads Chinese ID cards; the only passport line is a July 2026 platform guide saying foreign visitors show the document they booked with — the museum's own pages never mention passports. Tickets not bought on the museum's account cannot be scanned in · 2024-09-14
Closed days & hours
Closed Tuesdays, not Mondays, except public holidays. 9:00-17:30, entry to 17:00; 15 April-15 October 2026 open to 18:00, tickets to 17:30. Free days 2026: 16 Sep, 14 Oct, 11 Nov, 16 Dec (crowded) · 2026-01-05
How long
About 2 hours (our pacing): the 27-metre pottery ridge over the main hall, the double-sided carved screens and the 4-metre door gods are the show; the display halls are small · 2026-09-16
Best for
Anyone who came for the building, not the cases; the Xiguan day on foot; a Monday, when everything else on this page is shut
The most decorated building in the province — the 1893 ancestral hall every Chen lineage paid into, with brick, stone and wood carving, pottery and lime-plaster ridges, cast iron and murals on one complex — and a building first, museum second: the folk-craft halls are small and Chinese-labelled, the carvings are the point. It is also the fiddliest ¥10 in Guangzhou: closed on Tuesdays when the others close on Mondays, real-name WeChat ticketing, and a turnstile built for Chinese ID cards whose only passport rule comes from a platform guide. Sort the booking the day before and plan on the staffed desk, not the gate; the walk-up quota is for the elderly and disabled only. Skip the monthly free day and the mid-morning tour-group hour if you want the halls to yourself.

45 minutes is enough, or half an hour if the political exhibition leaves you cold and you came for the 1370 architecture and the shade · 2026-09-15
Best for
Whoever has been worn down by WeChat booking; the best-preserved Confucian school compound in the city; a shaded 15:00 stop in summer
The rare Guangzhou museum with no booking wall at all: free, no reservation, no ID, just the security scanner, by the museum's own guide. What it is: the Panyu county Confucian school of 1370 — Lingxing gate, pool and bridge, Dacheng hall, the most complete such compound left in the city — which in 1926 housed the sixth session of the Peasant Movement Institute under Mao Zedong, with the dormitories, lecture hall and Mao's office kept as they were. If political exhibitions leave you cold, come for the Ming architecture and the shade and give it half an hour; panels are mostly Chinese. It sits 400 m from the palace site and 800 m from Beijing Road, so it is the third stop on a Zhongshan 4th Road afternoon, or the only stop if WeChat has defeated you. Weekday afternoons are empty. Closed Mondays.

Closed Mondays. For the first museum of the trip for anyone; the passport-and-no-WeChat visitor, who has a desk here and nowhere else on this page except the free walk-ins.

Nanyue King Museum — Palace Site

南越王博物院 · 王宫展区

For the second museum of the day, after the tomb, for anyone who can book on WeChat; the one whose gate has a written rule for a foreign passport.

Guangzhou Museum — Zhenhai Tower

广州博物馆 · 镇海楼展区

For the hour after the tomb for the view and the export art; not a first stop for anyone who needs a desk.

Guangdong Museum

广东省博物馆

For the WeChat-capable visitor with a whole afternoon; a summer evening for anyone; not the first museum for a passport holder without the app.

Chen Clan Academy (Guangdong Folk Art Museum)

陈家祠(广东民间工艺博物馆)

For the Monday museum, and the one for people who look up at roofs rather than into cases; not the one to arrive at without a booking.

Peasant Movement Institute (Panyu Confucian Temple)

农讲所(番禺学宫)

For the visitor with no WeChat and no patience left; the end of a Zhongshan 4th Road walk; not the museum to cross the city for.
