Chengdu
Chengdu sells itself on four words — slow, spicy, pandas, ancient Shu — and every one of them is true: a bowl of jasmine tea in a century-old teahouse is the main event, 'mild' here is a notch hotter than elsewhere, pandas are a morning thing, and the 3,000-year-old bronzes of Sanxingdui wait forty kilometres out of town. Of the eight cities it is the best one for slowing down, and the easiest to over-schedule.
The Districts
Kuanzhai Alleys, People's Park and Qingyang Palace
8 placesThe old west of the walled city: the rebuilt Manchu-garrison alleys and the quiet lanes beside them, the city's oldest park with its 1923 teahouse, the restored 1930s street across from it, and the Taoist temple, park, lantern street and opera stage on the western ring road.
Wuhou Shrine, Jinli and Huaxiba
7 placesThe Three Kingdoms shrine and its folk street, the Tibetan quarter behind them, the missionary-era university campus to the east, and the two free parks — a warlord's mausoleum and a bonsai garden — on the district's edges.
Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li and Tianfu Square
10 placesThe modern centre: the civic square with the free city museum, the science museum and the ruins behind it; the pedestrian shopping street and its snack houses; the open-air mall around Daci Temple with the IFS panda; the café street behind; and the theatre where Chengdu watches its own opera.
Chengdu Panda Base and the Northern Suburbs
8 placesThe giant panda research base — the reason most people are here, with its two gates and two zones — plus the older zoo and its neighbouring monastery, the lake park, the botanical garden, the Xindu monastery of 500 arhats, and the new art-park museums across the north of the city.
Du Fu Cottage, Huanhuaxi and Jinsha
8 placesThe poet's cottage and the creek-side park, the provincial museum, the walk-in imperial tomb, the brocade looms, the Sunday antiques fair and the Pritzker architect's concrete ring — with the Jinsha gold-mask site closed for rebuilding until the end of April 2027.
Wenshu Monastery, Eastern Suburb Memory and Wangping Street
8 placesThe city's living Buddhist monastery and the pastry lanes around it; across the river, the 1950s factory turned music park, a ticketed dinosaur museum that accepts passports in writing, a student snack lane, and the riverside supper street under the 339 tower — a temple morning and an east-side evening, joined by a taxi.
Yulin, Jiuyanqiao and Wangjianglou
8 placesThe south bank: the bar street and night boats where the two rivers meet, the working 600-year distillery, the neighbourhood from the song and the expat quarter beyond it, and the bamboo park and university museum for the daytime.
Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng
8 placesThe 2,000-year-old irrigation works and the Taoist mountain, one train ride north-west — plus the old town's blue-lit bridge, the back-mountain gorge and its two old towns, and the two lesser-known panda centres (one open, one closed for rebuilding since April 2026).
Sanxingdui and Guanghan (day trip)
5 placesThe bronze-age Shu kingdom's masks and sacred trees in the 2023 new hall — the only ancient-Shu museum open while Jinsha is shut — plus the working restoration hall, the closed dig outside, and the two county-town parks that fill the hour before the train.

Getting by in Chengdu
Tap any line for the details.
Three choices for a first visit: (1) Chunxi Road–Taikoo Li. Lines 1, 2 and 3 meet here, and the free Chengdu Museum and the Jinjiang Theatre where locals watch Sichuan opera are both within two stops; city-centre prices, so eat one street back on Huaxing Street or Tangba Street. (2) Kuanzhai Alleys–People's Park, for the day you want to do 'slow Chengdu' properly: Lines 2 and 4 stop in the district, and teahouse, ear-cleaning, lanes, Taoist temple and face-changing fit in one day, at the cost of the city's most crowded free sight on your doorstep. (3) Yulin–Jiuyanqiao, the south-bank nightlife and neighbourhood streets: Jiuyanqiao is ordinary nightlife at tourist prices with bar touts on holiday nights (Line 13 Jiuyanqiao, Line 2 Dongmen Bridge); Yulin has no sights, only neighbours and hotpot lanes (Line 8 Fangcaojie for the Little Bar), and Tongzilin just south of it is the expat quarter — Western breakfasts and English-speaking pharmacies. The panda day is Line 3 plus a shuttle wherever you sleep.
